About

Formed by students and recent graduates of the Royal Academy of Music, Sylva Winds is a versatile and passionate chamber ensemble with a vision of revolutionising the perception of the wind quintet. They were founded at the Royal Academy of Music, where they won the prestigious Nicholas Blake Woodwind Ensemble Prize in March 2020 and the Digital Chamber Music Prize in March 2021.

In this concert, Sylva Winds will perform a rare and breath-taking programme comprising four wind quintet works by Brazilian composers, including some already established in the international repertoire such as Villa-Lobos’ Quintette en forme de Choros (1928, first published in 1953) to lesser-known gems such as Lorenzo-Fernândez’s Suite para Quinteto de Sopros (1926, first published in 1938), considered the first work for wind quintet written in Brazil. The other two works, Mario Tavares’ Quinteto para Instrumentos de Sopros and Júlio Medaglia’s Belle Epoque en Sud-America Suite, are prime examples of the combination between the classical tradition of composition and the colourful energy and sensuality that characterise Brazilian popular culture.
