About

The Salix Quartet was formed in 2020 at the Royal Academy of Music where they were selected to join the prestigious Frost Trust ASSET scheme, mentored by Doric Quartet violinists, Alex Redington and Ying Xue. During their time at the Academy, they featured in many concerts. This included a collaboration with horn player, George Strivens, in a performance of The Shining Gate of Morpheus by Eleanor Alberga. They also gave a recital of Chausson’s Concert with soloist Yaoré Talibart and pianist Michel Xie. Since then, they have been invited to perform at Petworth Festival and the Garrick Club. 

In this concert, the Salix Quartet will perform two string quartets by Alberto Nepomuceno and Francisco Mignone, two major Brazilian composers from the 20^th century, followed by an adaptation of César Guerra-Peixe’s Mourão for strings. After studies in Europe, Nepomuceno returned to Brazil where he worked as a leading musical figure until his death. His Quarteto de cordas nº 3 (Brasileiro) is an early example of the integration of Brazilian folk melodies into a well-established European form and idiom. On the other hand, Francisco Mignone’s second quartet is a prime example of the modern search for a Brazilian musical identity in concert music throughout the 20^th century. Although still very much influenced by European standards, Mignone’s music is infused by rhythmic and melodic patterns particularly present in the music of the North-eastern region of Brazil, a cultural cauldron that inspired many Brazilian artists in their search for a national identity in art. And, finally, Guerra-Peixe’s Mourão distills the essence of that same North-eastern region, being one of the best known examples of the composer’s involvement with the research and further development of deeply-rooted folk culture of Brazil. Such active exploration culminated with the creation of the Movimento Armorial, an artistic collective that also involved other creative figures such as musician Antonio Madureira and writer Ariano Suassuna.
